Why Walk

A committee of youth from Philadelphia’s five Armenian churches has organized this event, which will unite Armenians from the Greater Philadelphia area and friends of the Armenian community to honor the strength and perseverance of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, by insisting on proper recognition of the Genocide and ensuring that no group of people suffer such crimes against humanity ever again!

Over the past few years, many of the local Armenian organizations, namely the Armenian Youth Federation, Armenian Revolutionary Federation, Armenian Church Youth Organization of America, Armenian General Benevolent Union, Homenetmen, Armenian Relief Society, Armenian National Committee, Armenian Assembly of America,  and others, have all contributed to the success of this event which further promotes spreading awareness and our goal of recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

The program will take place on Saturday April 23, 2011.  The event will begin with a 2 mile walk through the city of Philadelphia where registered participants and bystanders will receive information about the Armenian Genocide and our group’s stand against all crimes against humanity. At the conclusion of the walk, everyone will gather together for a brief rally featuring keynote speakers and various performances by Armenian youth.

Participants in the walk are asked to register via the Register link above with a registration fee of $15 payable via mail or on the day of the event. The fee will be used to offset the expenses of the permits, t-shirts, and other miscellaneous expenses. Leftover funds will be donated to a genocide prevention charity, with a small amount being kept by the churches as seed money for future walks. Registrants will receive a commemorative t-shirt and flags. The registration fee can be made out to Holy Trinity Armenian Church – with the funds designated to the “2011 Philadelphia Armenian Genocide Walk.”

These Philadelphia Armenian youth are asking for your support for the event, and to request your assistance in encouraging the rest of the Philadelphia community to attend on April 23rd, 2011. Additionally, we appreciate any financial contributions, which will be used to help offset the expenses of the event. ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

We look forward to bringing our Philadelphia community together on April 23rd to celebrate our strength and perseverance, and demand justice for acts of Genocide committed by an nation!
